We return to Los Angeles with an entirely updated tour of old businesses that continue to thrive and serve the city's communities. There are 45 such places in this guide: bars, diners, restaurants, shops and other institutions, all operating much as they always have.

Some are grand survivors, such as the Bradbury Building, lit by its domed roof and still used as offices. Others are more modest: the Original Pantry Cafe, open 24 hours since 1924 and still with no keys to the front door, or Phoenix Bakery in Chinatown, where everyone comes in for the same strawberry cream cake, made to a recipe from the 1940s. There's Tiki-Ti, run by the same family since 1961, and Musso & Frank Grill, where the menu has barely changed since 1919.
