Set in a small U-shaped enclave of independent mini-shops off an ungentrified shopping street in Bushwick, Rebel Rouser has the atmosphere of a misfit teen’s lair or perhaps, as the owners describe it, “a rock’n’roll fantasy land”. Despite limited space, these rebels pack a lot in: there are horror movies on VHS, a good selection of used LPs and 45s running the gamut from 1950s doo-wop to punk and glam, badges, vintage clothes and assorted malcontent tchotchkes, all of it displayed with humour and priced to sell. It’s a highly individual enterprise, of a type that’s increasingly rare. While there, be sure to stop in next door at second hand bookshop, Better Read Than Dead, for a keenly priced, diverse selection.
