Plenty of people come here for potting compost, weed killer and a new pair of secateurs, and off they go again back to their gardens. But despite having all the basic tools, plants, accessories and ornaments you might expect from a garden centre, Petersham is much more than that. Spread across a series of converted greenhouses and barns in the rambling grounds of a private house, the stock also includes antiques, scented candles and diffusers, table linen – in fact all the trappings of a particular type of elegant living.
You don’t need a garden to make a visit worthwhile though, lunch and supper can be enjoyed in The Café – a slight misnomer for a place so refined. Or in the Teahouse Café, a charming greenhouse which has a simpler, more affordable menu, but still quite delicious.
