While we were in Lisbon researching our guide we had the great good fortune to stay at Baixa House. It offers comfort, friendly assistance and is located in Lisbons downtown, within walking distance of pretty much everywhere we wanted to visit. The house is a group of 12 short-let apartments in varying sizes, each one carefully and attractively decorated with its own kitchen and bathroom. On the coffee table is a selection of cards for genuinely good local businesses, and a notebook detailing yet more recommendations. But theres a sense of being cared for too: every day the apartments are cleaned and the fridge filled with cake, fruit, yoghurt, juice and milk. In the morning a little cloth bag containing fresh rolls is hung outside your door. Its a sort of invisible pampering, and we would very much like to grow accustomed to it.
