It’s unusual – rather too unusual – to see large modern art galleries outside the biggest cities, but the Hepworth Wakefield is one spectacular example. It houses a permanent collection of works by Wakefield-born Barbara Hepworth, and a regular schedule of modern art shows, all of which are free. The building alone is worth a visit – austere and bleakly beautiful, it’s as hard and angular as Hepworth’s sculptures are curved and organic. If that doesn’t persuade you, combine it with a trip to Yorkshire Sculpture Park, which is nearby.
